  1. I live in saratoga and im proud to say that I have the oldest track in America on my doorstep and the worst traffic I have ever seen in my life next door.

  2. Thoroughbred racing started in england , after english gentlemen  imported arab stallions and mated them with english mares , hence the name Thoroughbred's .They started racing them for fun and later became extremely popular , they were racing at Ascot at least 100 years before Saratoga but the first amateur racing was around 17th century.

  3. someone beat me to it. . I remember hearing that Saratoga was the oldest track when they were airing the Traverse Stakes on the tube. .

  4. It is Saratoga. Saratoga was established in 1863. The Travers Stakes is the oldest race in America dating back to 1864.

  5. Yes, it's definitely Saratoga.  It's the oldest organized sporting venue of any kind in the US.  Quite a nice place to go actually.

  6. Well if you want to get technical about it you will find that Newmarket is the oldest racecourse in the world!  Racing has been taking place here since the 1660s and the first race to take place "under rules" was first run in at least 1666 -the Town Plate, which is still run to this day.

But if you are refering to American racecourses, then Saratoga is correct!

Just for Yowsie's information, racing started at Ascot in 1711 so a good 40-50 years after Newmarket.  There's a reason why Newmarket is known as Headquarters you know!
