Something you CAN do now that would make a difference is collect pencils for The Pencil Project. Since education is the only way out of poverty for children around the world, you will be making a HUGE impact on their future. It's easy and very rewarding.

I would love to do something to raise money for St. Jude Hospital.  I would love to help all kids that have Cancer.

for example donating to Unicef, I donate like $25 every once in a while. they do really amazing things for kids around the world and when tragedy strikes they are there. go to unicef.com and donate

Why do people always think so largely??

It really is great that people want to assist the needy people in Sierra Leone, but there are people who need help here.

You don't have to help internationally to make a difference in the world.

I live outside Chicago, and recently, the downtown schools have had terrible test scores. Failing grades are up 23% this year. I think its a terrible shame that there are people who won't be able to achieve their dreams just because of the school they went to. Its a waste of pure talent that we may not be able to find the next Albert Einstein or Charles Dickens jsut because they didn't have access to a proper school.

I happen to live in a very affluent community who prides themselves in having great schools. Six kids in MY BIOLOGY CLASS ALONE have gotten into Ivy League schools.

I think its pathetic that kids my age are driven to quit school because of how terrible it is- when 10 miles away- my school is busy accepting awards and sending students off to major universities!

I felt terrible- I had to do something. So I asked my principal for permission to set up a tutoring program between our school and hte worst school downtown to tutor deprived children who live below the poverty line. It didn't take much- just a couple of phone calls and 600 kids who want to help out the community. Many of the kids by me wanted to do it for college applications- but now, htey ahve actually become friends with these other students. Now, I jsut found out, our school is negotiating donating a very large sum of money to provide computers in every classroom and new books for their school.

It didn't take much, but because of one suggestion to my principal, over 1,000 kids will be getting a better chance at a good future.

Now, I've even made otehr people want to reach out. A neighboring school of ours is looking into turoting programs with ANOTHER Chicago public school!

You don't need to do much to help out in the world, even small things like tutoring someone for an hour can be life changing.

People underestimate the importance of a good education... I hear this a lot. I know that there are starving people i nhte world. I know there is an AIDS epidemic. I know about global warming. But the sooner we teach people about these problems- they can keep htem from happening again. How well we prepare ourselves for the future determines the fate of humanity.
