  1. Whether by nuclear testing, or approximation through creatinine clearance , or even measurement using inulin, basically the goal is the same -- to estimate Glomerular Filtration Rate, which is the key measure of kidney function.

    Another way to think about it: GFR helps define the five stages of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD): http://www.renal.org/eGFR/ckdstages.html

    A GFR <60 mL/min/1.73 m2 automatically defines CKD, whereas with higher GFR values CKD can only be diagnosed when there are other abnormal findings (like having blood or protein in the urine).
