  1. Determine where you are going to be seated and try to position the TV at a height so that the center of the screen is at your eye level.  

    All LCDs have some variation in contrast with viewing angle and most manufacturers design them so that the optimum vertical viewing angle is slightly below normal (or straight ahead) viewing.  It's OK if the TV is slightly above eye level, but putting one over your fireplace, for example, is not a good idea - the picture will look washed out.

    This is the reason why the flat panel display stands sold in the store appear so short compared with other furniture.  With the screens so large, they have to be mounted low so that you get optimum viewing when seated on a couch.
