What is the optimal speed (mph) to go to get the most miles per gallon?

Say I was on cruise control for 10 miles, say there are no lights, other cars, or any other objects.

  1. Under those conditions, I would say 55MPH.


  2. I have heard 40-45 mph is correct.

  3. The best speed is about 40 mph. It depends on the car and the engine, but it's the slowest speed you can go in the highest gear without lugging the engine. Might even be 35 mph.

    Slower speed is always better because wind resistance goes up with the square of the speed.

    I tested this on my car, which has a mpg computer

    70mph, 28 mpg

    60mph, 31 mpg

    50mph, 34 mpg
