The real truth is that your sister, at six, had no clue but was going for a pretty sound!  

Therefore I don't think it "comes from" anywhere under the circumstances.  This is very sweet!  You might ask her to see if she remembers anything of the events at the time, or either of your parents, because I bet the story is quite touching.

Then, I read the other answers, and the coincidence of the Latin meaning of "glad" is a wonderful thing too, although your sister could not have known that!
