What is the origin of the monopoly tokens?

where did they come up with the car, the iron, the shoe... and all those other pieces?

The original set of tokens, released in 1937, were based on household objects-- when the game first came out two years previously, there were no tokens included.  Later in the 50s, the dog, wheelbarrow, and horse & rider replaced three of the original tokens, and in 1999 a new money bag token was added.
