  1. In 1932, James Norris, after purchasing the former Detroit Falcons, went out hunting and shot down a winged bird, having no idea the name of the bird, he called it Red Wing, due to the blood on the wing of the bird. Thus the name, as we know them, the Detroit Red Wings.
