Did you know that the first pancake-type foods were eaten by ancient peoples? No, they were not the same pancakes we eat today. According to what I saw on the Food Network, pancakes originated many centuries ago as a quick treat to serve unexpected guests. Not as elaborate as a baked cake, it is made quickly in a pan, hence the name "pancake".
