  1. as I understand it, the winners of a lot of cmpetitions get a "loving cup" a silver or gold cup from which they all drink in celebration.

the losers get a wooden spoon because there is barely a spoonful of whatever you drink in that and a spoonful doesn't go far for a team!

mind you, a wooden spoon is a lot easier to clean and care for, so there may be people who would prefer one for a trophy. I know Carlton does.

  2. It is designed for Victorian teams - as only teams from that state have ever won them!

  3. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wooden_spoo...

  4. I know the origin of it this year looks like Western Australia!!

    Haha..

Love to see all the players of the losing side get spanked after the last game!

Now that would draw a crowd!

  5. Wooden Spoon

A booby prize consisting of a spoon made of wood.

Historically, the least successful of the honour men (i.e. of the Junior Optimes, in the Cambridge University) were bracketed together and referred to as the 'spoon bracket'. Such men were so-called because they were presented with a wooden spoon, while the high achievers received a silver or golden one. Spoons were the usual prizes in place of medals.

The terminology is in common usage for sporting teams finishing at the bottom of a competition.

There you go thats where it came from, and saints have won the most of them.haha. 26 to be exact
