  2. Benchmark is a term that originated in measurement; particularly in carpentry. Workers would use the dimensions of their workbenches as standards of relative measurement. For example, an object which was twice the size of the bench could be seen as two benches.

    The process of metaphorical extension has, over time, given a figurative meaning to the literal term.
