An ad for a certain brand of turkish delights candy uses this phrase, and David Cronenberg used it to name his film -- in addition to many newspaper articles, etc. What is the original phrase/expression these uses are alluding to / borrowing from?

  1. My guess is the phrase came from the commercial itself.  I couldn't find any references of it in any other works before the 1950s.

'Fry's Turkish Delight (jingle by Cliff Adams) showed a male slave unrolling a carpet containing a glamorous female captive in front of an Eastern ruler who began feeding him lumps of Turkish Delight which was said to be 'Full of Eastern promise'.

The commercial has an appeal that would stick with people.  (This was probably very provocative at the time)  Over time, I wouldn't doubt them using and deriving other meanings from this phrase.
