What is the outside plant that is red in color and is furry and thick and comes to a point at the end

I have always thought that this was poison oak or poison ivy it is a large plant and very rich in color

  1. Sounds like sumac...the red variety is not poisonous to touch, the white sumac is poisonous...look up images online..

    edit: it is a tree, the red velvety "blossoms" are what you seem to be describing
