  1. 1)  The longer a forest goes without a burn, the more fuel piles up for the next one.  

    2)  Forest fires are a natural event (when sparked by lightning).  Nature has adapted to them, and as a result, often depend on them to remain healthy.  Forest fires remove undergrowth and unlock nutrients stored in slow decaying matter.  Forests maintained without fire tend to be choked and sickly.


  2. The US Forest service would rather put out fires then work with the logging industry and manage the forest.
