The benefit is they get more.

You get paid my base pay, but do not get retention bonuses like enlisted Soldiers get and have to buy your own uniforms. I know a lot of lower enlisted that got there enlistment bonus while deployed in Iraq and got paid as much as me or more if you consider the bonus.

But for the most part officers do get paid quit a bit more.
