Question:

What is the penalty for filing state taxes late?

I filed both my federal and state taxes online using Turbo Tax. I recently needed a copy of my state return for school and I went back to the site to find out that my state return had not gone through.

I'm mailing a copy to the Department of Revenue today, but was wondering what penalties do they have for not filing on time? I was expecting a refund, so I'm hoping it's not that big of a deal.

Any ideas?

  1. That depends on the state, so you'd have to be more specific.  Many states wouldn't charge a penalty if you have a refund coming, but some do.

  2. the penalty would set in if you owed the state!  You'll be okay - possibly a letter of reprimand, nothing more...

  3. you're normally charged a late fee but nothing too substantial.  They will more than likely send you a letter advising you of that and deduct the late fee from your refund

    Hope this helps
