Question:

What is the percentage of people below the poverty line in Greece?

A third of Greeks live close to the poverty line or under, a new survey has found.

The survey conducted last month by Kapa Research, a surveys company, and The London School of Economics on behalf of the ministry of economy found that poverty has begun to threaten social cohesion.

The survey says that slowly but steadily a 'third world' is being created inside Greece.

IS THIS TRUE?

  1. around 20% according to statistics.i believe the percentage is bigger though coz many people are saved by the fact that their families r tolerating to keep feeding them even if they re 30 yrs old..

  2. Why are you asking us Paul? Sorry, Panagiotis I mean.... You should know the answer if you were Greek like you pretend to be... Aren't you supposed to know the economic situation of your own country? :) :)

Or is your name Panayot instead of Panagiotis? :)

EDIT: Zoi, great answer! You're right, maybe Panayot should visit Macedonia and check out the living standard in Greece by himself...

  3. Every country has its own poor population, unfortunately.

Even USA (45 million people earning less than $800 a month), even Japan, even Switzerland.

So I don't understand your question, mister.

How can you compare Greece to a Third-World country?

    C'mon...

  4. Greece:

under poverty 9.2% and unemployment to 6.6%

in germany is 11% and unemployment 7.3%

in Turkey is 23% and 9.7% plus underunemployment of 4%

your country fyrom has 29.8% and unemployment 35%

so if Greece is considered as 3rd world country what the others are???

    edit:

6,089 people - both in the general population, and some special categories (homeless, poor, immigrants)????

So immigrants can be considered the Dynamic population of a country??

So if they all leave Greece tommorow we ll be a 1st world country????

Some people here should take into cinsideration, the statics that are from whole the Greeks (Ministry of economics gives the details) that for a "research" made in a small amount of Greeks, and specially to homeless......

    Thanks anyway,you prove your....sources!!!!

  5. There is two constants on this planet.

The American Dream and the Greek Miracle.

Most people on this planet know what the American Dream consists of.

But how many actually know what the Greek Miracle is all about?

Well, to make a long story short...

    In Greece... :

    1. We go to sleep at 3am and show up at work by 8am all refreshed (thanks to frappe)

    2. We eat a lot, drink a lot, smoke a lot and.. live long!

    3. We buy expensive cars we cant afford, buy houses we cant afford, dress in brand name clothing we cant afford but still... we don't owe as much to credit cards and banks, not as much as other Europeans do.

    4. We are one of the few nations that have managed to survive since the Ancient years and all our neighbors are jealous of us... simply because we are the closest ones to them (The Chinese, Japanese, Egyptians and Inuit are to far to reach).

    5. Many people live for less than 700 Euros a month and still go out everyday (..and every night), shop at IKEA and Practiker massively (as if the Second Coming is approaching and we gotta fix our houses for Him).

    6. Women that have been Mothers and are over the age of 55 are a species that has to be preserved (somehow...). Who else would openly state to their children (He/she is no good.. I will find you a girl/man to marry you).

    7. The sub-economy thrives! Only in Greece politicians recently decided to tax self employed people that make less than 10500,00 Euros a year. And how will all those people be able to afford the payments?

Simple! They will succumb to... some tax evading practices...

    8. In every other country in the world, the Laws have cracks.

In Greece, the Laws have "windows" that are not always open though...

    9. In Greece, taxi drivers and hairdressers are the ones that know exactly how the country should be run (maybe they should make a new political party called... "Scissors with a tarif on a road to Enlightenment..."

    ..and last but not least...

    10. Its the only country in the world that the State suffers financially, the citizens yell for the poverty around them, the State believes them but if you go to the "bouzoukia" they are stuffed with G700 people (G700 : The 700 Euro Generation)

In conclusion the percentage of poverty in Greece is -10%.

  6. I don't know where you are from, but if you are from Albania or Skopje you have to consider that Greece is generally richer than your area.

There are rich and poor people everywhere, don't forget that.

Greece is not as rich as Sweden, ok, but it's one hundred times richer than Nigeria.

Greece is a EU country, isn't it? In EU, there is a computer and internet almost every home, but in Africa only 10% people have basic things such as electricity, water and phone.

I heard that even in some countries in the Balkans there wasn't even real roads and people were still drinking milk from their own cows and goats...Maybe you are from one of these countries ?

  7. Your interest in our country is impresive, but you are not a Greek :-). One thing I can tell is that we are educated (I mean modern Greeks, even if they don't read a lot of books) and...

THE BEST WAY TO SEE THE STATUS OF LIVNG IS TO VISIT GREECE!

September is a GREAT GREAT choise, because there isn't such an extreme heat like in August and July and also the prices of the coundless 'rooms to let' are often very very good, even if you can't afford much!

Supposing that you come from a neighbouring country, as your style of 'script' shows (an American or British would use another type of question) I would recommend places near Thessaloniki but not IN THE CITY. There's a good pansion in Tzitzifies, close to the sea and to Thessaloniki. Another option: somewhere in Chalkidiki, for example Kallikrateia, Nea Moudania, Potidea, Fourka, Siviri, Armenistis, Gerakini (maybe you cautch up the fest of Agios Mamas!), also camps in Kalamitsi, Sarti (Platanitsi region).

Peloponnisos is another good option but too far away.  :-)

Dear Elaine, I honestly think that is a great opportunity for him, because it is near his country and the prices now are really low, compared to the fun that you can have! I've mentioned only the places that are really cheap, as far as I know.

  8. Have a small trip around the world, visit  powerful nations like the USA or Britain and you will see that life is hard globally. There is no easy life anywhere and the more people congregate, the less jobs there will be available. But maybe Greece would have had a few more jobs available if less people were working and paying no taxes if you catch my meaning.. ;)

So I would say if you find a country third world you shouldn't be swarming in it by the thousands.

  9. Yup, the figures are correct - one third of the population lives in poverty and two thirds live in fear of poverty.

Kapa Research did much research on Poverty in Greece from May to October 2007 on a total sample of 6,089 people - both in the general population, and some special categories (homeless, poor, immigrants) - in collaboration with the London School of Economics.

The original report is available here http://www.kapa-research.com/Default.asp...

The figures were also covered in the mainstream Greek media.
