  1. The growth in home schooling differs from state to state.

Not all states have notification, or registration requirements, and therefore  the numbers that represent who are currently being home schooled, or the growth in these states in not included in the statistics.

Often times parents also will not notify, or register until their children reach the mandatory attendance age, but have been home schooling them for a year, or two prior to having to notify, or register.

High school age students often times are also not required to notify, or register after age 16.

Even their number will be off because of the reasons I mentioned previously, however they have done extensive research in the area of home schooling, the reasons, and it's outcome.

  2. Based on extrapolation there are probably 1.5 to 2+ million homeschool students in America.

There were 750,000 in 1996 up from 500,000 in 1990 with a US government projection of 1 million by 2000.

This puts it between 3 and 4% which is low based on other figures I have seen in college studies which show it closer to 15%.

  4. This is really impossible to answer, since they're really not logged anywhere.  Conservative estimates place homeschooling children somewhere between 1 and 2 million in the US, but many states don't require families to register, so the number is unknown.  I live in a midwest state, and in my homeschooling group alone there are around 170-200 families, probably somewhere around 500-800 children.  There are many such groups in my area, and not all homeschooling families belong to a support group.  I would place an estimate at somewhere around 900-1,000 homeschooling families (some with only kids, others with multiple) within an hour radius of me, maybe more, and it's estimated that it grows by around 10% annually.

That's just in one city, and it's not even one of the largest in the US.  (There are about 400,000 people in our city, plus suburbs.)

There's really no concrete answer to that, though...sorry.  Hope this gives you something to go off of, though.
