I believe im fairly strong, and to add to that i have 3 brothers, whom I grew up fighting with (In a loving way) Anyway, I know what the exam requires but Im just wondering how extreme it is?

  1. Depends on the department.

At my department, the physical challenge to become a member consists of four repititons of: a 100 foot hose pull, a 75 foot army crawl, three flights of stairs, and 15 swings of a sledge hammer. all done in full turn out gear, with an airpack and mask on.

That's a volunteer department. My buddy works down in one of the ghettos of detroit. The physical test to get on their department comes on the first day on the job.

The crew makes a really nice, big breakfast and encourages the new guy to eat as much as he can.

Then- after they are done eating- they train and drill the new guy until he pukes.

If he shows up the next day- he passed.

That gives you an idea, I hope.

Every department is different. You can talk to your local department and see if they'll help you train.

    Good luck.

  2. VERY tough. i think they took it to court claiming that it was sexual discrimination because no women could pass it.
