  1. Short Answer: Xanax is used medicinally to treat anxiety disorders, but is abused as a way to "get high."

Alprazolam, the generic name for Xanax, is a tranquilizer used in the short-term relief of symptoms of anxiety or the treatment of anxiety disorders. Xanax when abused is taken orally, chewed, crushed (then snorted like cocaine), or crushed (then dissolved in water and injected like heroin). It acts as a nervous system depressant in a way similar to alcohol. People who abuse Xanax report the following feelings:

    --difficulty concentrating

    --"floating" or disconnected sensation

    --depressed heartbeat

    --depressed breathing

    --excessive sleep and sleepiness

    --mental confusion and memory loss

    --addiction
