  1. On embarking a ferry he advises the Captain and Helmsman in regard to conducting the ferry to the other end of the route at which is found  another ferry landing.  Upon disembarking at the end of the crossing he goes ashore and ask some one what the h**l is this place called.


  2. Make sure that he/she does not fall in the water

  3. The pilot knows the water lanes within the habour.  He knows the depth of the water and the routes that can be taken by a boat / ship.  The captain would be most annoyed if the ship ran aground, ergo the pilot guides it out / in.

  4. his job is to hide the stash of f**s and whisky.

  5. Literally, to make certain that he does not fall overboard.
