I have a standard vga cable in my wall. One end with a connector for TV and I cut the other end off (to run through studs) to connect to a pc. The end I cut-off is all molded & I can't see all the colors of wires for all the pins. Does anyone know the pin number to wire color pinout? All I can find is pin & signal name.

  1. The colors are not necessarily the same in every cable. Manufacturers likely used whatever wire was most available to them. As I like to say, the electrons don't care what color the wire is.

  2. I hate to say this, but you´re most likely in a bad situation. The previous answerer is correct in that many cable manufacturers don´t follow a standard color coding for wires on factory cables. The only way to be sure of which wire is which, is to pin out the cable. To do this you need either a multi-meter or a tone generator and inductive amp. Multi-meters are easy enough to find a cheap one, but you need to have both ends of the cable in your hand at the same time, highly unlikely if it´s run through a wall. With a tone generator you put the tone on one end of the cable and use the inductive amp on the other end, it can be time consuming running back and forth, but if the ends are apart you don´t have a whole lot of choice. If you can still take the cable back out and pin it out, that would probably be easiest. Just use the Ohm setting on the multi-meter to go through one pin at a time and write down which color goes to which pin. Once the cable is back in the wall, use your list to correctly reterminate the PC end and you´ll be OK. If you are very lucky, and the manufacturer´s website has a color coded pin out, you can get the info from there, though it sounds like its a generic cable, and you won´t have much luck.

The only other option I can think of, is to cut off both ends and reterminate them both. That way you can decide on your own color scheme to use.
