What is the plastic called that lines the underneath of my 02 Acura RSX type S? What is it for? ?

It lines the bumper, engine, fenders. Apparently the bolts that hold it on fell off sometime. I was driving on the highway and the wind gusts blew it off and it was scraping the ground, so a tow truck driver had to cut part of it off. Is it important to replace? Can I take the rest of it off? How much does it cost to replace?

it just stops c**p from the road getting into your engine bay.

i personally wouldn't worry about it, but others might.
