It's about a rock star who is going to the army and his agent and his girlfriend/fiance have him give one girl in small town Sweet Apple a kiss on the Ed Sullivan. The jealous boyfriend, Hugo, ruins it all, and the agent and his girlfriend/fiance have some trouble in their relationship

It was sort of a parody on Elvis going into the Army.. (the setting was the late 1950s)

except the guy was named Conrad Birdie who was going into the Army and there was a contest for one girl to give him a kiss good-bye. The small town girl that wins the contest put the whole city in an uproar, along with her own family.. . free publicity for the town,(they will be on the Ed Sullivan show which was the most popular variety show in its day) the jealous boyfriend.. several smaller subplots.
