What is the point in Wigan Athletic?

Question

Wigan is traditionally a rugby town and don’t trust the round ball. Why has David Whelan continued to pump millions and millions into the team when he is the only one who cares? They are not even a real team technically having come up from non-league and brought their way to the top.
