I was just wondering what is the blasted point of dressage? I don't understand why anyone would get a horse and make it kinda dance in a ring. To me a horses purpose is to either be ridden or on a farm in the old days pulling carts. Surely it would take longer to "dress the horse up and do its hair in those tiny plaits" than what you would be in the arena. Just curious

  1. What is the point of any competitive sport or activity? People do it because they like it I guess. Doesn't do it for me. Probably does take ages to dress the horse up. In the 'olden' days when a lot of deliveries such as milk, bread, firewood etc were done by horse and cart, a lot of the drivers would 'dress' their horses up once a year on May Day, plaiting their hair, putting little bells onto their manes, decorating the carts etc. It was just some quaint folk custom. I don't get the point of soccer either - two teams of grown men trying to kick a ball through some sticks, boring everyone to death in the process? They just like doing it and don't have anything that seems more meaningful to them..

  2. What's the point of silly questions asked by people who are clueless but think they're being cute or funny? Just curious.

Personally, I like to ride a horse that actually obeys me, which is why I do some basic dressage (the word means training) on every horse. But if you like stiff, unresponsive horses, by all means skip the dressage.

I don't do any sort of horse "dancing", because it's usually a stiff, forced parody produced by heavy-handed means.

  3. well its alot different if you love horses (like me)lol.  whenever i watch dressage it just absolutely takes my breath away -there's nothing like watching a horse and his rider moving together as one in the arena. (just my opinion)  and people just enjoy it, too, just like other people enjoy any kind of sport. its all in what you like.

Spanish Riding School of Vienna maintains the tradition.
