What is the point of pledging in a sorority or fraternity?

Me neither.  It was initiallly supposed to be about promoting scholarship, leadership and philanthropy, but to me it's really more about promoting elitism and snobbishness and a "you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours." mentality.

I didn't got to university at the traditional college age, but even if I had I doubt I would've ever pledged a sorority. I once ask a friend of mine who went to an Ivy League school if she ever pledged a sorority, she said to me "I don't need to "buy" my friends."  We both laughed.
