It's a survival strategy that evolved for situations where there is no social mechanism to enforce justice. The only way to make sure that people don't exploit you is to make sure everyone knows that you'll be so crazy that you'll go our of your way to inflict harm on an enemy, even at a cost to yourself.

Economists in the field of Game Theory have come up with something called the 'Ultimatum Game', which shows how this works. In the ultimatum game, one player gets to divide the "points", while the other only gets to choose whether to accept or reject the offer.  if the offer is rejected, both players get nothing. In this game, it's irrational to reject the offer, because it's always better to get something than nothing. However, you can also harm the other person by rejecting the offer, even though ut costs you something to do it (like revenge).

If you play the ultimatum game repeatedly, people who get a reputation for being "crazy" or "vengeful" will be treated more fairly by others, because they will purposely reject "unfair" offers, even though they are worse off for it in the short term.

So by cultivating a reputation for vengefulness, it ensures that in the future people will be less likely to antagonize you.
