  1. Its fun to have a tradition.  Kind of like the Angels had the rally monkey.  Of course its silly, but who cares.  Let the fans have their fun.  At least it was an original idea, and shows the creativity of true fans.  Traditions are a great way to celebrate your team.  Rag on it if you like, but seems to me the only time we hear fans complaining about it is when the Wings are wiping the floor with their team.  They can't say anything bad about this dominating Red Wings team, so they resort to tradition bashing, city bashing, and fan bashing.

  2. the juices from the octopi are good for the ice...the chemical composition of the two make for a fast skating surface ;)

  3. good luck!

  4. tradition and good luck (GO WINGS!!!)

  5. The Motor City's proud tradition of saluting the Detroit Red Wings with slimy creatures of the deep dates back over half a century.

The first octopus landed on the ice during the Red Wings' 1952 Stanley Cup run, courtesy of brothers Pete and Jerry Cusimano, who owned a fish market. If you know your cephalopods, you will know that an octopus has eight tentacles. In those days it took eight playoff wins to claim the Cup, hence the supposed symbolism of the gesture.

The Red Wings were perfect in the '52 playoffs, sweeping the semifinal and the final in straight games. The octopus has been a good luck charm ever since.

By 1995, the team had adopted the tradition by introducing a mascot, Al the Octopus. Al is raised to the rafters of Joe Louis Arena before every home playoff game, and used in team merchandising and promotion.

  6. To be annoying

  7. its a tradition that has been around for a long time. if your team had an awesome tradition you would want it to go on forever and thats what wings fans want. i think its a pretty cool tradition and i am not even a wings fan.

  8. The octopus first made its appearance on April 15, 1952, during the Red Wings' Stanley Cup playoff run.

Two Detroit brothers, Pete and Jerry Cusimano, who were fishmongers in the Eastern Market, threw one on the ice at Olympia Stadium. Each tentacle of the octopus was symbolic of a win in the playoffs. Back then, the NHL consisted of just the original six teams, and eight wins (two best-of-seven series) were needed to win the Stanley Cup. The Red Wings swept the series that year, and the octopus has come to be the good luck charm ever since.

    Now for the "REAL Story"!!!!!!!!!!:

Jack Adams was this guy that like hung around the arena and told players whats up.  Well, his bossman, Norris, kicked it and was drinking 40s with his homies in heaven, and this trick named Marguerite, was all like on his junk.  She was all like not having any of that, na what I'm say'in.  Then, her younger bro, Bruce was all like, "Yo, I knows, you ain't like no seafood and you need to step.", so that mutha, threw down, octo sytle.  Marguerite, was all like, "h**l, no!", and that trick dipped.  The Bruce and Jack were all like, "Man, let keep throw'in down octopusi, to ward off them hoes."
