What is the point of using multiple coats of primer for painting?

i dunno if i should use more than one, cause it seems like sorta a waste and i want to know why people use more than one

  1. it gives your paint a bright fresh look. it also makes your paint go on smoother. Some people use primer for white...which gives an interesting texture and look.  


  2. Sometimes one coat is not enough. When I use primer I want my base to be pure white and smooth. My oil paint smooth on nicely like watercolor. It is soooo nice.

  3. It's a preference.  More than one coat, especially with sanding in between, gives you a smoother surface to work on.  Some people just prefer that texture as opposed to the toothier texture you get with only one coat on canvas where the texture of the canvas is more prominent.  I've known some painters who put layer after layer of primer and end up with this silky smooth surface.  It's beautiful.  But I don't have that kind of patience.
