  1. Whatever you do, don't contact your school district.  They tend to be painfully unaware of homeschool law.

In TX, you simply withdraw your son from school in writing - a note will do just fine - and start homeschooling him.  You don't need to have him tested, evaluated, or anything like that.  Homeschools are considered private schools in TX, so the state stays out of your house.  Kind of nice!

Then, you find curriculum and go for it.  Homeschool conventions are the best place to look - if you're in northern or central TX, there's one in Plano this weekend.  You can get info on it at http://www.nthen.org/index.php/conferenc...

I would also suggest joining a homeschool group - you get support, your son gets to take part in activities and classes, and you often get educator discounts on many things.

    Hope that helps!

  2. You can do it.

A friend of mine does it and she has a teaching plan and study books that she bought to keep them on track with other students.  If your child graduates from your homeschool then there is a required test to prove proficiency for most colleges.  Also you may need to document your hours and schedule for entrance to some Universities.  Keep records for future use.

I have listed some links for home schooling plans approved of in Texas.  I do not know them at all.  I just now found them online.

EDIT:  Just notify your local school district that you are home schooling when you start up.  Fed-Ex would provide proof of receipt and picture of signature of signee. You don't want them falsely investigating his truancy.

  3. Here's a great place to start. It has information on homeschool laws and free homeschooling options. http://canihomeschool.blogspot.com/

    Best of Luck!
