I try to pick the out with something or other before eating so I don't have to deal with spitting them out. When spitting, you can use a napkin or empty can/bottle.

Have a napkin with you so you can spit the seeds out in there. Put the napkin close to your mouth when doing this, don't place the napkin half a foot a way and spit towards it, hoping that they land in the it. When your done eating, throw the napkin with the seeds out.

This rule goes for ANY food you are eating....

IF, for any GOOD reason, one must expel a piece of food (or NON-food, in the case of bone chips, seeds, gristle, etc.), it gets removed from the mouth in the SAME MANNER as it was put INTO the mouth.  That is...

If it is FINGER FOOD... fried chicken, watermelon, cherries, etc.... then it is perfectly acceptablel that FINGERS are used to remove the offending particle(s) from the mouth.

If one uses a FORK... then the FORK is used.

If the SPOON was used to put the mouthful of food in (i.e. soups), then the spoon is used to remove it.

SIMPLE and CLEAR enough for EVERYONE to understand... and PERFECTLY acceptable manners/etiquette for all eating ocassions.

I actually read about this a few months back in an etiquette book.

The "proper" way to eat watermelon is with a salad fork or dessert spoon.  Seeds can be discreetly passed from the mouth to the utensil and then to the plate.

That would be for a very formal setting, like a fancy brunch at a very expensive restaurant.

Most people at home would find it acceptable to discreetly pass the seeds from your mouth to your hand then place the seeds on your plate.

Try picking them out before putting the piece of watermelon in your mouth. When you do have on in your mouth, try discretely spitting it into a napkin. Don't miss the trashcan.
