What is the polite way to shut someone up?

I have a family gathering this weekend. I last saw my family a month ago, and I was telling them about my boyfriend whom I was moving in with, saying what a great guy he is and that I will bring him to the next family party to introduce him. We broke up soon after that & my extended family doesn't know. I know as soon as they see me they will ask where my boyfriend is, I will tell them we broke up and I will be asked "what happened" repeatedly. I REALLY don't want to talk about it. What is a nice way to tell them to butt out, but at the same time be stern so that they don't press the issue?

  1. well u could just lie and tell them he had something to do like a family emergency.

idk how to tell them to butt out w/o sounding rude tho

  2. Be honest.  Your family is asking because they care about you.

Tell them just what you just told us.

Tell them "I know you see I'm upset, but I'm not really wanting to talk about it. I really just want to have fun at the party with you all."

    or something like that... heh

  3. When they ask "what happened", have a generic answer.  Same answer for everyone that asks.  What happened is nothing, that's why he's not here.  Very straight faced, polite and Cooley walk away!  You go girl!!!
