What is the preferable weight of a BMX - i use it mostly for street?

Well if you are really into it, anything from 27-30lb

Some people have a lot lighter, but if your just starting then that range is good.

You may also want to get a full Chromoly(CrMo) frame. its stronger, and because they use less of the material for the same amount of strength, it will be a lighter frame as well, even though CrMo is slightly heaver than Hi-Tensile steel (Hi-ten)
