  1. A beam splitter is simply a mirror with a very light coating of metal, so it reflects half of the light that strikes it and transmits the other half. When illuminated by a coherent light source like a laser, a beam splitter produces TWO beams that are coherent, which can then be bounced off the target and recorded on photographic emulsion, their interference patterns resulting in a hologram.
