Hi,

I just bought a car from a private dealer yesterday and now I have to get the car tax.

Could someone please tell me what is the procedure for that and what documents are required?

Thanks.

  1. The dealer should have given you a green slip saying you are the new owner. Now all you need to do is take that into the post office with mot certificate and insurance

  2. you will need documentation and MOT. Ring the DVLA for register for a tax disc.

  3. go to the post office. You will need an MOT certificate and your driving license. You could even go onto DVLA website.

  4. You will need to go to a post office that issues tax ( you can find out on line which ones)

You will need to have the mot cert. a valid insurance document, and also the V5 or green new keepers slip to tax it.

  5. registration document and MOT certificate with insurance certificate  to local post office with the money

  6. You can tax it online at www.direct.gov.uk/taxdisc. You will need to have a current mot certificate and car insurance before you can tax it.

  7. You will need:

    A valid MOT certificate

    A valid certificate of insurance

The correct fee - or exemption certificate if applicable

Also, because you have just bought the vehicle, you will need the "New Owner Supplement" (tear off section from the vehicle's registration document V.5) which the seller must, by law, give to you when you buy the vehicle, and the appropriate form from the Post Office "Application for Motor Vehicle Road Tax" (I may not have got the title exactly correct here).

Take all of the above to a Post Office that issues road tax (not all Post Offices can do this)  Or,  take it all to your local VLO (Vehicle Licencing Office)  though these are only in major cities and may not be convenient for you.

With all of the above, you should be able to tax your vehicle right there and then.  Do be aware that you can only tax a vehicle from the beginning of the month, so if you buy your disc now, it will tax the vehicle as from August 1st, not from the day you taxed it, or bought it.
