  1. Where are you?  In most states in the U.S. it takes legal action of some sort to change your surname.  For example, you enter into a marriage contract (legally binding) and take on your spouse's name.  You get adopted and take on the surname of the adopter.  You petition the court when you are age of majority (or older) to have a name changed.  If you change your surname without legal action, it is technically an 'alias.'  Mostly people who have something to hide use an alias so if you want your new surname to be legal, consult a professional.  We have friends whose son changed his name when he turned 18 from Brian Brown to Wren Whiteseven.  It was neither a very complicated nor very expensive procedure.  Of course that may vary from one state to another.

  2. You do not have a sirname.  You have a surname and any court can change it for you with the proper paperwork
