  1. To the computer, data is data forever.  It becomes information to the human user, often after it is converted for easy use.  That might be formatting, or graphing, or automated comparison to other data, and so on.

  2. data is information

  3. Other example words might include:

Parsing: converting code into presentational information, like this website you are reading. Oh wait, this is wrong definition.

Decoding: streams of data are converted into what you see or hear.

  4. I don't know if I really understand your question here but I'll give it my best shot.  Since data is technically information.

Computers are basically big boxes that do a lot of calculations very quickly.  That's what makes it so powerful, that it can do repetitive tasks over and over without getting tired or being bogged down.  One thing to note that a computer only knows 2 numbers.  0, and 1.  It's called Binary and a 0 means that it's off and a 1 means that it's on.  This then translates into a transistor that will turn something on or turn something off.  How does this all relate?  Well every time you type it is constantly turning different keystrokes on and off, this is how the software can interpret what you are typing.  Now that you have the human interface out of the way the fun part.

The fun part comes with programming, lots and lots of code make up your operating system and more importantly make up what you can do with your operating system.  Every part of your computer has it's own set of objectives and more importantly has it's own set of computer instructions.  This means that you can type data into the computer, and as a human you can read the data and see if it's truly information or just junk.

Just to give you an idea of how complex your computer is take one small part.  Connecting to the internet.  Here is the layers that it has to go through to even get connected with another computer: http://www.webopedia.com/quick_ref/OSI_L...

It's a large world with a lot of data out there. However it comes down to how the human interprets the data to validate that it's information and not just data.  One thing to think about is that you have a sheet that has every brand of tomato soup.  Now aside from all that it's just data.  It becomes information when you start to look at particular items of the tomato soup, such as serving size, price, amount sold, ect.

Keep your head above the data,

    Chad
