What is the process of acquiring health insurance?

Do you need to get a physical, or do they just do a Q\A? And if there are pre-existing issues (such as asthma), is that an automatic refusal? And do I go to a local insurance broker or over the internet? Thank you.

  1. Expect a comprehensive Q&A. If you have any preexisting medical conditions the insurance company may request your medical records before making their decision. Be patient, it takes a while.  Asthma is not an automatic denial, and not necessarily even an automatic rateup. It depends on the severity and treatments received.

I recommend you find a local broker, such as myself. What will take you days - will take an experienced agent minutes. Your local agent lives or dies by referrals, and is motivated to treat you well. Make sure that (s)he represents multiple insurance companies, offers you several plan options, and then compare them to what you find on the internet, just to be sure.  Beware of sites that requires you to provide your contact information before giving you a quote - they are be selling your information as sales leads. Expect lots of calls. Another problem with the internet is that the amount of information available is overwhelming, making the information you need difficult to find. The brief plan summaries that are so easy to find are not comprehensive enough to make an educated decision.

    Good luck.
