How does someone come to get a role on broadway? Is an agent required? How do you find an agent or casting agency after college? What is the normal audition process?

  1. If you have an agent, it's much, much easier to get a Broadway audition. Most auditions are closed - meaning you need an appointment, which you can only get through an agent.  Sometimes there are open auditions (anyone can attend) but they're cattle calls.  Also, they're usually set up so that Equity members are seen first; non-members are seen at the end of the day if there's time.  So you can make it without an agent but it's a lot more difficult.  If you're at college studying musical theatre, hopefully at the end of your degree there'll be an agent showcase, where agents are invited to see you perform and hopefully sign you up.

  2. 1. You have to audition for the role, obviously. That's the only way you get it.

    2. An agent is NOT required.

    3. You don't really need an agent to be successful. A lot of people never get one, or wait 6months after college until they find a good one.

    4. The normal audition process is kinda long. Just make sure you have at least 3 good monologs ready to perform at all times. Also, have at least 2 16-bar songs ready to sing at all times. Make sure you can dance well too.
