Nuclear fusion. Four hydrogen nuclei collide and fuse to form one helium nucleus (two of the protons are converted into neutrons). But the helium nucleus is a bit less than the sum of its parts, and the extra mass is converted to energy during the fusion. 600 million tons of hydrogen is fused every second, producing a tremendous amount of energy.

Hydrogen fusion, 4 Hydrogen atoms are combined into a Helium atom. The mass of the Helium is less than the total mass of the 4 hydrogens. The difference in mass is released as energy.
