  1. When a baby is born, you fill out the paper work in the hospital to apply for his/her social security card.  If you do not yet have the S.S. card, call the hospital and ask...verify that the paperwork was done and ask how long it usually takes.  You do not need the S.S. card to get a passport. You do need the birth certificate.  To get a passport currently, it takes under 4 weeks for standard processing.  You can pay the extra $60.00 and also the express mail fees and get the passport in less than 2 weeks.  See 1st site below for all info on applying for  a passport for a child.  see 2nd site if you need to apply for a S.S. card for your child...only if you find out that the hospital did not apply for it for you...which would be very unusual.

I just looked back at your previous question and see that you are not a U.S citizen,  But, if your baby was born in the U.S., he/she is a citizen, and definetly can get a S.S. card and a passport.
