These old boards are all being replaced with digital ones and I was curious if there is a proper term for the board other than the long and obvious one I typed in the question?

  1. Manually-operated arrival and departure boards like the one there used to be at Waterloo Station, London.

The board stood 20 feet above the departure gates at the entrance to the platforms and was operated manually by staff who stood at the foot, working levers to set up the various routes.

The sets of revolving signs showed the train destination, platform, and stations calling.

All this was changed regularly as the various trains came and went.

Nowadays it's all done by computerised digital screens.

  2. Hello.  The proper name for this is "Solari Board" due to the fact that these boards are made by the Solari Company in Italy.  These types of flip boards are being retired, here in the US, in favor of the LED light.  If you would like to see a good example of a Solari Board flipping, click here, or copy and paste, if unable to click.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIwTq4-0D...

  3. I know exactly what you mean, but have  never heard of them being called anything other than the name you give them - clack boards. There was something magical about watching them roll over with names, to me as a lad, of exotic destinations. Something that is missing from digital boards.

  5. whotado
