When someone says to you on Monday, "I'll see you next Friday.", would it be correct to conclude that they mean the Friday of the next week?

  1. Yes, I would say so. If they mean that they will see you during the same week they would say, "I'll see you this Friday" or "I'll see you on Friday."

  2. Never assume anything.

To be 'correct', yes, it would mean the Friday of the following week.  But many people use it to mean the next Friday that arrives, ie, the one in the same week.

    If in doubt, ask.

  3. This Friday is the one coming up, whether its one day or 6 days away.

Next Friday is always int he following week.

Language is relaxed though so you will need to check with people and claricy each time.

If it is Friday, next Friday would be 7 days away.

  4. Possibly.  Because if they were intending to see you this Friday, they would say, "I'll see you on Friday", which would mean this week.  But to be certain, I would try and get it clarified from the person who said it.

  5. It would mean the Friday that is not tomorrow, or even a couple of days hence, but the one after that.  If it's said on a Tuesday, it probably would mean the Friday ten days in the future.  But, said on a Sunday, I would take it to mean "Friday next."  ("Friday next" seems so much more clear, in any case, to me.)  The other clarifying phrase would be, "this coming Friday".
