My husband and I are adopting this wonderful 3 yo little boy! My husband's name is Richard John and we want to name our son Richard Joseph. Is it ok for him to have Junior in his name or would he have to be Richard John to have that? Is that only related to 1st names or to both 1st and 2nd?

  1. They have to be identical to use Jr. I think Richard Joseph would be more appropriate than Richard John Jr. for an adopted child, but I'm not sure about the actual etiquette, if there is one.

  2. A "junior" has the exact same name as his father.  He can be Richard junior, but you can't use the middle name unless it's the same.  Why not call him Richard John, junior?

  3. the names should be completely the same.

  4. You can call him Junior, but to put Jr. after his name, the entire name must be the same. The Jr. or Sr. serves to identify which is which since the names are the same.

  5. "The term ‘junior’ is only correctly used if a child is given exactly the same name as his or her parent."

  6. It has to be the identical full name, for Senior, Junior or the 3rd, etc.
