What is the proper way to connect a generater?

The proper way is with a Transfer switch.

This seperates your homes' wiring from the utility feed before it makes the connection to the generator.   This eliminates any possibility of "back-feeding" to the utility wiring, which is hazardous to Linemen making repairs on the downed grid.

This would be for larger, pad-mounted (whole house)generators.

For smaller ones on wheels, you just use a lot of cords, and plug in what you need.

Definitely use a transfer switch if you plan to wire into the house panel.  Safety is a major concern here.
