I'm trying to understand my equipment...so with my game improvement golf clubs. what would be the text book way of playing them....ball in normal position with a closed club face at address...or move the ball back in my stance? I understand at the end of the day its what is comfortable and effective...I would just like to kno what was the original idea when these offset irons were made...so closed face with normal ball position or squared club face with ball more to the back of my stance? Thanks a million.

  1. I mentioned in another question about offset, these clubs are designed to help people who slice the ball.

The club sets up closed so that when you take your normal stance and swing, it help keep the club face from opening on impact.

Normal swing stance and ball position, otherwise you are completed defeating the purpose of the offset clubs.

  2. I agree with Sam.  You should not be adjusting the ball position or the face.  Offset just allows you to square the club face.

  3. Manufacturers sometimes build offset on all types of clubs (woods, irons, putters).  Offset refers to the distance that the front side of the hosel (of the clubhead) is in front of the clubface.  This design allows the clubface to impact the ball later than a club without offset.  Offset is intended to help give the ball a higher trajectory.  As already mentioned, offset allows you to square the clubface, which is needed for people who slice the ball.  If you already hit the ball straight, you are not going to want to get clubs with offset.  Blade irons do not have offset, so I'm assuming that you are not using these clubs.  If you are having trouble with hitting offset clubs, you might consider changing your grip.  Woods generally have less loft than irons because a mis-hit will cause bigger variation in control.  So if you are using offset woods, it is best to slow down your swing.  The intention of offset putters is to allow you to putt with your eyes directly over the ball.  However, the benefit of offset putters vary from golfer to golfer.

  4. The honest truth is that if you really want to improve, you need to learn how to hit normal clubs with limited offset.  You may think this is helping you, but it is not.  In order to become a single digit handicap, you need to be able to work the ball both ways and be confident in it.  The offset clubs are just promoting a bad swing.  Get some nice irons with limited offset and learn how to hit them straight. This will improve your game in the long run, while the offset just improves your game in the short run.  Your swing changes round to round, so there is no point in having offset clubs.
