  1. you refer to any vessel as "HER"  or "SHE"


  2. Never call a Naval Vessel a "boat"  They are ships.  One exception are submarines, they can be called "boats"  They are always referred to as female...She, her, "The Gray Lady.

    You could refer to the Hull number...For example, when I was in, the USS LittleRock was CLG4    Cruiser Light Guided Missle    The USS Amphion was AR13..Auxilliary Repair

    Subs are  like   SSBN Submarine Service Ballistic Nuclear

    DDs wereDestroyers..DEs were Destroyer Escorts  Carriers were CVAN  Carrier FixedWing Attack Nuclear

    Helicopter carriers were LPH Landing Platform Helicopter

    Bunches and Bunches more

  3. and don't confuse coast guard vessels with naval vessels. they're right, naval vessels are u.s.s., in the coast guard they are u.s.c.g.c. (us coast guard cutter)
