  1. Ask who they are and why they are calling then take the msg and tell them you will give the Dr the msg and he will return the call later. Doctors usually return calls after 6.

  2. As in ANY office when the caller asks for the boss....Say "I'm sorry the Dr. is with a patient, is there anything that I can help you with?"  I can't begin to tell you how many times I have preached this to the receptionist at my business.  So many times, the customer/client/patient has a simple question that you can answer.  Ask the caller to leave a message and a return number.  If he/she refuses to do so, then you can count on it, the boss doesn't want to talk to them.  Always, always, try to take a message first.  If it is a legitimate call, the person will leave a number, AND a message.  Allow the Dr. to decide which calls he will return.

  3. Ask where they want to be directed. Then send them.

If the office is too tiny for that, then you don't get to screen them, you just take the call. If they want to talk to the Dr, and she/he is busy, you take a message.

If you want more than that, you need to be more specific
