  1. sit on the seat. hips square to the floor.heel on the pedal. and your leg should be straight on the down side but not knee locked out.

  2. The prober height of the bike seat is when if you are sitting on the seat and you extend your leg to the bottom. If you do this and it is dead straight than you should move the seat down. Visa Verca. Your aim is to get the seat hight at a level where your leg is just a bit bent. (obviously this is when your leg is at the bottom of the stroke.

  3. High enough, that when sitting down, there is a slight bend of the knees.

Too much bend or a fully straight leg can cause muscle strain or knee damage

  4. The best exercise bike is your normal bike on a mag/air trainer ... that way your position is identical and you will be on your own bike seat (important since most exercise bikes have bulky, uncomfortable seats).

Short of that, raise the seat so that when the heel of your bare foot is on the pedal your leg is straight. Now, with a shoe on and the ball of your foot on the pedal your leg will have just enough bend.  Do a check by having someone observe you cycling from behind. If your hips rock side to side you are too high ... lower a few millimeters at a time as required.  If you find the seat uncomfortable you may have to lower slightly more, but bike shorts should help.

  5. Im a track cyclist, so not sure if this will help as its for racing, and we use straps etc, have cleats on the bottom

But id say sit on the seat, and put your heal on the pedal, thats pretty close to the right height when your heal touches and your leg is strait.

Should be better for your knees

  6. low enough that it isn't touching your liver
